BIG BROTHER & THE HOLDING COMPANY
QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE
SIR DOUGLAS QUINTET
WILDFLOWER

location: The Panhandle (Golden Gate Park)
place: San Francisco, CA
country: USA

The Panhandle is a park in San Francisco that forms a panhandle with Golden Gate Park. This little strip of land, just a few blocks north of the Haight has been the site of many concerts including those by Big Brother, the Dead, the Airplane and even Jimi Hendrix. It is long but very narrow, being three-quarters of a mile long but only one block wide.

In 1966 a group of San Francisco artists formed an organization for mutual support and direct action against the arts establishment. Calling themselves the Artists Liberation Front they put on a Free Fair in Frisco's Golden Gate Park Panhandle that was the first free outdoor rock performance in the Bay Area. It's a 2 day event with the Dead closing out the performances on the second day. It's said the band "made a memorable appearance".

NOTE: This performance by The Dead marked Bob Weir's 19th birthday.
