from the liner notes:

"Though primarily known as Leroy Carr's silent accompanist, Indianapolis' Scrapper Blackwell (1903-1962) remains unsurpassed as a blues guitar soloist. His tonal variations in works like Kokomo Blues (a work in the D position Johnson rendered as Sweet Home Chicago) are so striking as to make him sound like several guitarists taking turns within a single song. He also archieves the effect of a guitar duet by skillfully interspersing bass strumming with single note work. Johnson's records reflect a general admiration of Blackwell: his basic right hand approach may seen as an attempt to emulate Blackwell's fullness. Otherwise, Johnson borrowed literally from Blackwell, using his chord shapes for treble work in the A position and mimicking his sound in the introduction of Hellhound."
