Doug Sahm formed his first band, The Knights, probably sometime in 1957. Exactly who comprised this early band remains unknown, though presumably they were white kids from the East Side whom Doug had little problem recruiting to play R & B and rock and roll music. Doug, in addition to being the lead singer, played piano, lead guitar, tenor saxophone, and whatever else was needed on any given night. The Knights worked at high school sock hops around town, and landed their first big gig on December 18, 1957, opening up for Rickie and the Keys at the Texas Theatre.
