- A few words from the taper might be of interest.
The summer of '73 was a great time to be 19 years old and listening to music. That summer I saw, that I remember, this show, Howlin' Wolf, Miles Davis, The Watkins Glen Fest and Bob Marley plus lots more. I don't remember much about this show. I went with my friend Sam, now a college prof in Texas, and I suspect that we were doing plenty of all the things that you can do at 19. But, as Carville wrote, I'm all but positive that there was only one show that night. My tapes of O&ITW run app. 2 1/2 hours and Doug Sahm did a full opening set of 1 hr app. I had a complete recording of his set, but one of the cassettes broke years ago and I got frustrated and threw it away. Stupid, I know, but how was I to know that there'd be PCs, an internet and this site called Dime.....I'm quite certain that O&ITW did two sets and the break was at "Wild Horses". Anyway, three sets of music plus intermissions had to run over 4 hours, so I don't see anyway there could have been two shows. All the internet listings for this show on Dead sites list the last 5 tunes on my set list as the first show partial. I haven't heard the recording they based their info on, but I'll bet their partial show is the last 5 tunes of this show.
That raises the issue of the currently circulating recordings. I haven't heard any of them. Even in 73, at a Dead related show, there was probably more than one taper. Can anybody out there listen to my recording and compare it to the one that's been circulating and confirm that they are different. The drop outs in "Tragic Romance" would be a giveaway. It might be that the circulating recording(s) are from my tapes. It's quite possible that I gave a copy of my tapes to Jaime P., a pioneer Dead taper/trader back when we were in Ithaca NY in 73 or 74 and he might be the source of the circulating recording.
There's a not too intrusive thumping sound on some of the uptempo tunes. My best guess is that someone is stomping their foot. Usually, in those days I taped the mic to the backof the seat ahead of me. Maybe, the person ahead of me was pounding on their seat somehow.
I think the recording really captures feel of the show. The crowd is crazy!!! Enthusiastic is a complete understatement. The guy that keeps yelling for "Deep Ellem Blues" gets annoying after about the 12th time but hey, he probably is a US senator now or runs a multi national company, or God forbid, is your surgeon. The band is in great form and seems charged up by the crowd response. I hope you enjoy it and I'm glad I was there to document it. Thanks to Carville for the encouragement and all his help.
[allsoundz is the taper; Carville is the person who seeded this show on DimeaDozen]
