comment #1: The original recording of "Allá En El Rancho Grande" was made by Pilar Arcos and Juan Pulido on 5 April, 1927. It was released on Brunswick 40203 and Vocalion 8114 (Vocalion was a subsidiary of Brunswick), at perhaps a slightly later date.
Pilar Arcos was born Pilar Pubillones in Havana, Cuba, on 6 June 1893 of Spanish parents. The family eventually settled in New York, where Pilar married a young Cuban, Guillermo Arcos and started singing on stage, attracting the attention of Columbia, for whom she recorded. She toured Puerto Rico, Cuba and Mexico before returning to New York, where she lived until 1932, recording both as a solo artist and together with the greatest Latin-American voices of the time, including Juan Pulido, José Moriche, Rudilfo Hoyos, Juan Mario Oliver and Carlos Mejía. She travelled to Spain and enjoyed success there, too, until her career in that country was cut short by the outbreak of the Civil War. She returned to the USA and took part in several films in the 1940s. Pilar Arcos died on 10 January 1990.
