BILL DOGGETT

Although he was early on known as a fine swing-based pianist, Bill Doggett found his greatest fame in the 1950s as an R&Bish organist, particularly after recording his big hit "Honky Tonk" in 1956. He led his own big band in 1938 which accompanied Lucky Millinder for a year. After stints with Jimmy Mundy's short-lived orchestra (1939) and back with Millinder (1940-42), Doggett arranged for the Ink Spots (1942-44) and recorded with Johnny Otis and Illinois Jacquet (1945-47).

He replaced Wild Bill Davis with Louis Jordan's Tympany Five (1948-51) and, following Davis' example, took up the organ. After recording with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Ella Fitzgerald, Doggett led his own groups, recording frequently for King throughout the 1950s. [Scott Yanow, All Music Guide]
